Revolution in Artificial Intelligence (AI) Boosts Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)

In the midst of the rapidly growing digital economy, the revolution of artificial intelligence or commonly known as AI is no longer just a mere conversation in scientific laboratories. It has become the main driver in accelerating the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) across the country. This transformation is not only increasing operational efficiency but also opening new opportunities in the increasingly competitive global landscape.

AI’s involvement in the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector has brought about a significant paradigm shift. Formerly considered a luxury for multinational corporations, this technology has now become a tool for ‘democratizing’ the economy, allowing small traders to enjoy and compete on the same stage. As we all know, the main challenge for SMEs often revolves around limited human resources. However, data from the Microsoft Work Trend Index 2024/2025 report reveals an interesting fact, that skilled workers in Malaysia are starting to use AI in the workplace to remain productive and save time. Moreover, AI algorithms enable entrepreneurs to analyze customer data more deeply. For example, predictive analytics systems help businesses forecast future purchasing trends, while enabling inventory management to be done more systematically without wastage.

Benchmark for Success

Delving into the global reality, many SMEs in developed countries have reaped tremendous benefits from the adaptation of this technology. In the United States, small retail companies now use AI platforms like Stitch Fix to automatically personalize fashion recommendations to customers according to individual preferences. Similarly, in China, small traders on the Alibaba platform use AI-powered live streaming technology. This technology enables real-time language translation to take place. According to the OECD 2025 report, nearly a third of SMEs globally are now using generative AI to compete with large companies, with 65 percent of them reporting a drastic improvement in worker performance.

However, the journey of SMEs in all countries towards full AI digitalization still has its ups and downs. The Malaysian government, for example, through the 2025 Budget, has allocated strategic funds to boost AI adoption and industrial digitalization. This step is crucial because according to the SME Corp report, despite increasing awareness, only about 32 percent of SMEs have fully digitized their operations. According to world-renowned computer science expert Andrew Ng, “AI is the new ‘electricity’ for the 21st century. Just as electricity transformed every industry a hundred years ago, AI will now transform every aspect of SME business, from how they market products to how they make strategic decisions.”

Human and Machine Synergy

On the other hand, entrepreneurs need to realize that AI is just a tool. Human creativity remains the key. Therefore, SMEs are advised to adopt a hybrid approach where AI is used for routine tasks, while human labor is focused on product innovation. This shows that human and machine synergy is crucial in controlling all activities, like the saying “as essential as the relationship between the river and the bank” (mutually beneficial and interdependent).

In conclusion, the integration of AI is no longer an option but an urgent need for all entrepreneurs and traders to learn and understand the behavior of this technology. Entrepreneurs who quickly and effectively adapt will remain relevant, while those who are static and lack knowledge of this technology will be sidelined in the competition. Now, the light of AI has illuminated the path for all SME entrepreneurs to step further and create a tremendous impact on the country’s economy. Therefore, entrepreneurs are encouraged to embrace AI technology openly and use it wisely so that their companies and businesses can compete healthily.
