Assoc. Prof. Dr. Reno Renaldi. SKM. M.Kes, as the Chairman of the Senate of Hang Tuah University Pekanbaru and an Education Observer in Riau, appreciates the policy taken by Governor of Riau, Abdul Wahid, to prohibit farewell activities outside of schools as a very positive step that supports the creation of more inclusive and affordable education for all.

According to Prof. Dr. Reno Renaldi, with the increasing costs borne by parents, especially in farewell and study tour activities, this policy emerges as a much-needed solution, especially with the unstable economic conditions.

“The main goal of this policy is to ensure that education does not become a heavy financial burden for student families. In this context, this policy is not only relevant but also very profound, as it considers the welfare aspects of parents,” he said on Tuesday (13/5/25).

Furthermore, the Education Observer in Riau stated that Governor Abdul Wahid’s policy shows the commitment of the Riau Provincial Government to create more equitable and just education.

He added that with the ban on extravagant farewell events, Governor of Riau also reminds all parties that education should be accessible to everyone, without discrimination based on financial ability.

“This policy also signals that education in Riau should focus on the academic and character development of students, both in soft skills and hard skills, rather than on the extravagance of ceremonial events that can burden parents,” he said.

Prof. Dr. Reno Renaldi further emphasized that Governor of Riau’s firm actions in imposing sanctions on schools that violate this rule demonstrate serious commitment to uphold this policy.

The Education Observer in Riau mentioned that the removal of school principals for non-compliance is a form of seriousness that deserves appreciation.

“Although the Governor does not have direct authority over private schools, efforts to urge and remind them to follow the same rules show consistency and a desire to create equality in the education system,” he said.

Lastly, Prof. Dr. Reno Renaldi stated that this policy not only protects the interests of parents but also ensures that education in Riau Province can proceed more fairly and justly.

With clear and strict regulations in place, it is hoped that in the future, no students will be hindered in continuing their education solely due to cost factors.

“And all parties can focus on the actual quality of education,” he concluded.
